B Vacays: Santa Barbara

Life's been pretty hectic lately around these parts, so when an opportunity for a quick vacay to Santa Barbara presented itself, I jumped on it! I've lived in Orange County for a few years now but even though Santa Barbara is only a few hours drive away, this was my first time there. The drive up PCH lent itself to some spectacular ocean views that reminded me of just how much I really love living in California.

The little B&B we chose was absolutely darling! They had us in little casitas, complete with a hot tub and fireplace; I almost didn't want to leave the comfy room all weekend. Made complete with breakfast in bed, it was sheer bliss.

No surprises here, we spent most of our time there trying out various tasting rooms on the Urban Wine Trail. Favorites were: Municipal Winemakers, Drake Wines and Area 5.1 Winery. We also got to try out some tres yummy restaurants; if you're ever in the area, be sure to check out Blue Tavern and The Lark

If SB isn't on your California to-do list, add it pronto. Between all the good wine and delicious food, I came home from the short but sweet weekend feeling totally rested. Did I mention it was sheer bliss? :)

Happy Friday y'all! Thanks for reading.

Vest Interest

Top: Anthropologie // Vest: Forever 21 (old) // Skirt: Forever 21 (old) // Shoes: Proenza Schouler // Clutch: Kate Spade // Necklaces: Bardot, Forever 21

I don't consider myself to be much of a badass leather vest kind of gal, but you know what they say...fake it till you make it! This faux leather vest is much more rocker than I could ever aspire to be but the hot pink clutch indulges my girly side enough to make it a-okay.

After a very mild winter around these parts, the temps have been steadily climbing so expect to see Bernikins in lots of airy dresses and comfy shorts come summer--I'm a big advocate of the no pants club in warm weather.

Thanks for reading y'all!

My Little Sophie Turns Two!

Today marks a special day as my little Sophie officially turns two! This sweet pup deserved to spoil with a special birthday cookie and outfit (custom-made, natch). I feel truly blessed to have such a happy pup in my life and she truly brings me more joy than I could have ever imagined from another living thing. Here's to many happy years with you, my sweet puppy dog!

B Cooks...Homemade Granola

I'm not normally a huge breakfast person but lately I've found myself entirely too hangry by the time 11:30 rolls around so I've been pushing myself to have a light and healthy snack in the morning. My go-to's are a cup of yogurt with some fresh berries or a handful of granola with a generous helping of vanilla almond milk. I've found that store-bought granola has entirely too much unnecessary sugar so when I found a recipe for homemade granola in my new favorite cookbook, I had to try it! It turned out quite yummy and I can't wait to make it again with different fruit variations. Here is my recipe, with some slight modifications from the original.

3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened shreeded or flaked coconut
1 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
1/4 cup toasted wheat germ
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/3 teaspoon coarse salt
1 cup maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 large egg white
11/2 cups of dried cherries or any other dried fruit

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Combine all ingredients except the egg whites and dried fruit in a large bowl, tossing to coat evenly. Whisk the egg white in a small bowl until frothy. Stir into the granola mixture, distributing evenly throughout. Spread the mixture in a single layer on parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 45-55 minutes. About halfway through the baking time, use a large spatula to turn over sections of the granola carefully. Rotate the pan if granola is not baking evenly. When it is evenly browned and dry to the touch, transfer the pan to a cooling rack and allow to cool completely. Once cooled, break up granola into preferred cluster sizes. Sprinkle in dried fruit.

Life Lately: March 2014

March was quite a busy month! It started off with a visit from an old friend, where we indulged in SoCal must-dos of Disneyland and a beach day. Then came my SXSW trip (more on that here), where the highlight of my visit was definitely getting to sit on the Iron Throne at the Game of Thrones exhibit! (P.S: Are y'all planning on catching the Season 4 premiere this weekend?) After such an indulgent array of food and drinks in Austin, I thought that a juice cleanse was in order so I embarked on a very hangry three-day period sans solid food. Full disclosure: I ended up cheating with some egg whites. I found the experience to be quite torturous but I have to say, I'm much more aware of my diet post-cleanse.

SXSW 2014 Recap

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Austin, TX as an attendee at SXSW Interactive and let me tell ya, it was the most wonderful adventure. It was a jam-packed few days but I can honestly say that I learned a lot, had a ball of fun and absolutely loved bonding with my team.

The interactive portion focuses mostly on tech and digital innovation so it was the perfect opportunity for me to nerd out and learn about the new initiatives that other companies and thought-leaders are pioneering in the digital marketing sphere. At one of the sessions, founder of TOMS, Blake Mycoskie announced the launch of TOMS Roasting Co. and it was quite a memorable experience to have been in the room when he launched this new business venture with such fanfare. As an Arkansan at heart, I was also overjoyed to be in attendance at Chelsea Clinton's keynote address--she was elonquent, composed and completely brilliant. Her commitment to global progress utilizing tech is utterly inspiring and I cannot wait to see what comes next for this smart cookie. Hands-down the best panel I attended all week featured a handful of my favorite editors: Eva Chen (Lucky), Elizabeth Holmes (WSJ), Stella Bugbee (The Cut) and Jane Larkworthy (W magazine). These ladies are the best of the best when it comes to utilizing social media in the editorial world and it was lovely to pick their brain for a bit. Last but not least, it was a delight to hear Lena Dunham's keynote address! The line to get in was frenzied and long but well worth it. This sassy lady was so incredibly intelligent and witty and it's remarkable that she's achieved so much success at such a young age. I came away from the sessions with such admiration for the pioneers in the digital space, and was particularly impressed by how much of an impact women leaders are making in the industry. Hooray!

Let's be real, I also ate real well while I was there. Austin was overflowing with top-rated restaurants and we had quite a few culinary treats during our time there: Mexican-fusion at La Condesa, fancy barbecue at Lambert's and classic Texan fare at Moonshine. Yum!

I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend. It was great to soak in the Austin culture and get inspired by all-things-digital--fingers crossed for next year! :)

Triumphs All

Top: J. Crew // Skirt: Zara (last seen here) // Shoes: Charles & Keith (old) // Clutch: Club Monaco // Accessories: J. Crew, Bauble Bar, BCBGeneration

If I could, I would write an entire album of love songs dedicated solely to J. Crew graphic tees. It's true love, y'all! This tee was my handiest travel partner when I was in Austin for SXSW (more on that later). I wore it with this skirt, I wore it with jeans, I wore it with yoga pants--you get the picture.

If you're lusting over the clutch, you're in luck! It's still available here and on sale! It might seem small but the little thing packs quite a punch--I managed to fit my wallet, a lipgloss, a rollerball and my phone without any issues.
