New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 - Trend Alert

L to R: Milly, Michael Kors, Naeem Khan, J. Mendel, Proenza Schouler // images via Style.com

Crop tops have been everywhere. And we'd better get to crunching as it would appear that the trend is here to stay. Peek-a-boo midriffs were all over the runways this past NYFW and I have to admit that even I'm starting to embrace the trend. It's not quite my style to rock a totally bare midsection with jeans or cutoff shorts, but I love the idea of showing off a sliver of skin when paired with a pencil skirt.

One of my favorite cropped looks was from Milly (far left image)--I loved the juxtaposition between the feminine floral print and the sporty zipper detailing. Naeem Khan's (middle image) take was much more girly and a look I would love to replicate; the embroidered top would look equally luxe with a charcoal gray pencil skirt, making it quite the perfect office ensemble. I was also quite taken with the cropped looks from Proenza Schouler (far right image). The leather detailing paired with the midi skirt was a more casual take on the trend but uber chic nonetheless.

What do you think of the crop top trend? Will it be one you dare to try yourself?

Maxed Out

Dress: Riffraff // Belt: J. Crew // Necklace: Francesca's // Bag: Coach

The only thing better than a maxi dress is a maxi dress with pockets. Maxi dresses are my absolute favorite because you can pair them with flats for an easy-breezy weekend outfit or throw on some accessories and a chunky heel for a more dressed up look.

I also love that the dress is from the cutest boutique in Arkansas, a state that will always be near and dear to my heart. In fact, I plan on layering red necklaces with the dress for a complete Razorbacks-ready look to cheer on my beloved Hogs--Woo Pig Sooie!

Cheetah Girl

Top: Ambiance // Skirt: Free People // Shoes: Valentino // Necklace: Anthropologie // Clutch: Gap

I'm generally not huge on animal print, but this skirt was just too great to pass up. It's chenille, so it's essentially a throw blanket disguised as a skirt and it's just the right length for a short gal like me. Now on the hunt for the perfect pair of animal print pumps! These are currently the top contender.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 - Favorite Ready to Wear Looks

L to R: Prabal Gurung, Carolina Herrera, Victoria Beckham, Derek Lam, Jason Wu // images via style.com

Spring collections tend to be my absolute favorite. The colors are punchier, the prints more cheery and the silhouettes a touch sexier. Show-stopping gowns aside (that post to come soon), there were plenty of jaw-dropping ready to wear pieces that came down the runway as well.

Prabal Gurung: Prabal Gurung's spring collection was a "celebration of the elegant woman", and celebrate he did! His play on bright colors and daring prints is bold enough to make a statement but subtle enough to rock to the office or on the red carpet. I would bet good money that First Lady Michelle Obama will be wearing quite a few pieces from the selection.

Carolina Herrera: No one does femme elegance quite like Carolina Herrera. Her collection featured languid silhouettes and breezy fabrics, all showcasing Herrera's impeccable tailoring. One of my favorite looks featured a blush colored midi skirt that would make a great investment piece as it transitions wonderfully from day to night.

Victoria Beckham: Our favorite former-Spice Girl's spring collection was decidedly peppier than her previous showings. I particularly loved the geometric cutouts and use of bright colors. No surprise that my pick was this pink ensemble that featured trumpet flare detailing and a crisp white belt.

Derek Lam: Leave it to Derek Lam to make fashion turbans a chic thing again. My Southern roots cheered with glee as gingham looks took center stage in his spring collection. I'm dying for this black and white gingham dress, which toes just the right line between sweet and sexy with the longer hemline and low neckline.

Jason Wu: It's no secret that Jason Wu is one of my all-time favorite designers. Wu used to draw comparison's to Oscar de la Renta's ladylike aesthetic, but it seems that the young designer du jour is moving towards a sexier and edgier clientele. His spring collection highlighted a sleek and fashion-forward woman, from his vampier take on the classic suit to evening wear with a clear sportswear twist. I loved his injection of sparkles into daywear--a beaded tank top paired with a crisp pencil skirt = glam office wear.

Studded Blooms

Dress: Zara (old) // Jacket: Club Monaco // Bag: Coach // Shoes: J. Crew

If I were reincarnated into a pair of shoes, these shoes would be it. They are just the right amount of girly and sassy, all packed into a 4-inch heel.

This Coach purse has been incredibly versatile and has been my go-to bag to quite a few weekend trips, from Disneyland to the wineries. I have a soft spot for Coach accessories--such great prices for amazing leather pieces. I currently have my eye on this clutch! (A possible upcoming birthday splurge perhaps?)

Happy Friday y'all!

Sequined Kisses

Top: Forever 21 // Skirt: Zara // Shoes: Sigerson Morrison // Clutch: Kate Spade

I have had my eye on this Markus Lupfer sweatshirt for quite some time and while I am all for a splurge every now and then, $400 for a sweatshirt (albeit a very cute one!) is a little steep for me. Luckily, online shopping/perusing pays off and I found this beauty at Forever 21! The quality was much better than I expected and I dare say I finally found my perfect sequined lips sweatshirt. Love at first sight, y'all.

Anchors Away

Top: Nordstrom // Skirt: J. Crew (last seen here) // Bag: 3.1 Phillip Lim // Shoes: Valentino // Necklace: Forever 21

This outfit is what I call "my attempt to look business casual but all my nice clothes are at the dry cleaners" look. The skirt is centuries old at this point but I find the print just too darling to put away. You can also tell it's the tail end of the week for me as color-coordinating becomes too much of a challenge, resulting in an all blue/black combo. TGIF, Y'ALL.

Donuts & Sundaes

Top: Madewell // Jeans: Rag & Bone // Shoes: Prada // Jewelry: J. Crew // Tote: Kate Spade

With last week being a short week because of Labor Day Weekend, this week has felt uber long and tiring. On days that I have a styling brain freeze, a loose top and skinny jeans are my go-to outfit.

This sheer tunic top from Madewell is a great layering piece--if only I had snagged it earlier in the summer to pair with swimsuits for the beach. One of my co-workers pointed out to me that my shoes looked like donuts and then another said they looked like chocolate sundaes. Lord knows I love a yummy dessert so I'll take that as a compliment! ;)

Fashion PSA

Gap: 30% off all orders and 40% off orders $125+. This entire look is just darling!

J. Crew: 25% off select Fall items. This baby is on the top of my wish list.

Schutz: I'm a huge fan of this oh-so-chic Brazilian footwear brand. They finally launched an e-comm store and are offering 20% off their newest collection! (Coupon code: SCHUTZ1YR). My suggestion: Run, don't walk. Especially for this pair.

Piperlime: 20% off boots! I think these would be perfect with skinny jeans for fall.

Tough Love

 Dress: J. Crew // Vest: Forever 21 // Shoes: Valentino // Bag: Coach // Necklace: J. Crew

This dress is sort of magical.

1. I wore it to a job interview and landed my current job! Magic.
2. It's been sitting in a suitcase from my trip a month ago (shame, I know) and I pulled it out with zero wrinkles. Neoprene gypsy magic.

I had hoped the leather vest would toughen up the look but I think I ruined my street cred with the floral necklace. At least I tried? ;)

Dye Hard

Dress: Free People // Shoes: Rachel Roy // Clutch: Gap // Necklace: Bauble Bar // Sunglasses: Forever 21

When it comes to shopping, I am nothing if not extremely determined.

I saw this dress somewhere on Instagram a while ago and just had to have it so one lost package, a reshipment and a Nordstrom sale rack later, it's finally mine! While it's very much a summer dress and it's now officially fall, I'm telling myself that I get a pass because I live in sunny California. :)

Happy Wednesday y'all!
